BACKGROUND

Njere means wisdom and Moto means fire in Shona. Literally the name translates as wisdom is like fire, if you do not have it you can borrow from others. Once you light it you must keep it burning and pass it on to others as well. The Institute is reigniting the Fire of Indigenous Shona Traditional Wisdom and Indigenous Traditional Knowledge from other Indigenous communities and bledding it with mordern science.

The Njeremoto Biodiversity Institute located at 12 Northdale Farm Institute, 54 km north of Masvingo City along the Beitbridge-Masvingo-Harare Highway in Chatsworth Intensive Conservation Area, Gutu District of Masvingo Province in Southern Zimbabwe (GPS coordinates S19o 35.80’, E 30o 46.21’), reseables the problems of land degradation facing many rural communities in Sub-Saharan Africa. The Institute with its 223.4 Hectares demonstration site is near the Great Zimbabwe National Monument, it is a registered Trust (local not - for profit organization) in Zimbabwe and a registered 501(1)c not-for-profit in Washington DC USA; founded on the premise that taking a holistic approach to management of our community and natural resource base upon which we exist can lead towards a sustainable civilization.

This approach contributes to the realization of Millenium Development Goals (MDGs) MDG 1 Poverty Alleviation; MDG 3 Gender Women and Youth Empowermrnt; MDG 6 HIV AIDs and other deseases; MDG 7 Environmental Sustainability particularly Biodiversity Conservation, Reversing Land Degradation and Desertification as well as being a strategy for Climate Change Adaptation and Mitigation and finaly MGD 8 Sustainable Partinerships.
